The crystal has to be delivered to the player via a series of gutters with gaps in them. The gaps can be bridged temporarily by holding down one of the eight buttons on the front of the machine, but the numbers don't correspond to the position of the bridge on the gutter. The player can practice with dummy crystals as many times as they like, but they only have one chance once they decide to release the real crystal.
